Toxic Tour Android Application

The Internet System for Networked Sensor Experimentation (iSENSE) is web system for collaborative scientific inquiry. The iSENSE site enables users to describe their own scientific experiments, upload and share data, and create and save dynamic data visualizations.

The Toxic Tour App being showcased was created for the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO), which organizes walking tours of environmentally hazardous sites in Chicago.  When citizen volunteers go on the tour, they use the Toxic Tour App to record observations, which are uploaded to the iSENSE system for storage and analysis.

The Internet System for Networked Sensor Experimentation (iSENSE) is web system for collaborative scientific inquiry. The iSENSE site enables users to describe their own scientific experiments, upload and share data, and create and save dynamic data visualizations. The Toxic Tour App being showcased was created for the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization as a specialized data collection App compatible with our iSense Project. The app allows users to easily send data up to the iSense server for analysis in attempts to find trends in pollution in the area surrounding Little Village, Chicago. Upon the findings from the data, it is the hope of the organization that contributors to pollution can be pin pointed and eventually eliminated. Toxic Tour App was created to comply with LVEJO’s preexisting Toxic Tour, where users collecting data are able to input both qualitative and quantitative data pertaining to 28 different locations along a short tour route of the area. Once all data fields are filled, the users are able, in clicking the “post to iSense” button, send all data up to iSense, where it is merged with existing data collected by other users, pertaining to the same experiment. This data pooling and visualization capability is key in data analysis as it applies to the goal of LVEJO.
