Description

The following project was designed to be used in an 8th grade science enrichment class in which the purpose is to review prior years' curriculum in preparation for the 8th grade science MCAS test.

The topic is density.  Students will have reviewed the properties of density and how to calculate density.  The Isense project will be used to compare the densities between various compounds, mixtures, and elements.  Guiding questions will be used to elicit the students' understanding of the topic of density.

The data regarding the densities was taken from:

http://www.delsearegional.us/Academic/Classes/HighSchool/Science/Physics/FirstYear/Reference/Density.pdf

Guiding Questions:

Answer the following questions using bar graphs or the saved visualizations...

1.  Which substance has the greatest density of all three categories?  Which is the least dense?

2.  Which elements have the greatest and least densities?  Compounds?  Mixtures?

3.  Which type of substance (category) has the greatest average density?  The lowest average density?

4.  Name two substances that would float in distilled water.  Explain.

5.  Name two substances that would sink in distilled water.  Explain.

6.  Repeat #4 and #5 but use milk.
