Project #1635

1492 Views
Description

This project was created just for fun….I’m from New York and thought I could revisit my home through Google maps. In addition to the latitude and longitude of some famous landmarks, I tried to add a general location as a field, such as midtown, east side, etc. Students can add data to the project via a contributor key: Label = Levinson Homeroom; Key = New York.

Data was collected from two sites:

maps.google.com

http://www.aviewoncities.com/maps/nyc.htm

Guiding questions:

  1. What is the northernmost landmark that’s visualized on the map?

  2. If you were able to travel from Battery Park to Central Park in NYC “as the crow flies” (meaning in the most direct route from one to the other, ignoring streets), how far would you be going? (Hint: Use the key in the lower right corner; choose km or miles).

  3. What landmarks are included in the “other” category?

  4. Name 3 landmarks you see in midtown.

  5. In what direction would you be moving if you went from Lincoln Center to the Empire State Building?

  6. Find the 9-11 Memorial. (Hint: Select it only from Groups) What major street is it located near?

  7. They say it takes practice to get to Carnegie Hall. How would you give directions to someone? At what intersection would you guide someone to get there?

  8. When using the saved visualization “NYC Landmarks by Location”, what section of the city has the most landmarks mapped?

  9. Using the “A view on Cities” website above, research another 1 or 2 landmarks in or around New York City. Use the contributor key (in Contribute Data, manual entry) with the label “Levinson homeroom” and key “New York.”
