Project #1654 on iSENSEProject.org
Species that are in danger are classified as critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, and least concern.
Using the World Wildlife Fund's website, I mapped all of the critically endangered species on the planet. This project could go in many directions from geography, to map practice of latitude/longitude, to science research projects of species and habitats, and even branch into ELA to encourage writing for a cause.
These statistics were shocking to me! I hope it encourages students (or anyone viewing) to think outside of their own worlds and make more responsible and earth-friendly choices.
1.) On which continent do you see the greatest number of critically endangered species? (Be sure to click on dots, as a dot could be hiding more since species share habitats.)
2.) On the map visualization with cluster markers, where do you see the highest concentration of critically endangered species?
2a.) Why do you think that is?
3.) Of the species with KNOWN populations, which species' remaining population is the lowest?

* Populations were entered, if given. When ranges were given, I entered the median number. Also many species cross borders into many countries, so I tried to pick the most central location for mapping purposes.
