Project #1693

Description

Due to the altitude of Mount Everest, climbers must spend several weeks on the mountain to get acclimated. This project illustrates a typical acclimation schedule.

Guiding Questions:

  • Look at the "Oxygen level" visualization. What percentage of oxygen (compared to sea level) is in the air at the summit?
  • How do you think your body would react to such a decrease in oxygen?
  • Why do you think climbers must climb up and down several times from base camp before attempting the summit?
  • Why do you think sherpas (native Nepalese guides) have less difficulty with the high altitudes?

Typical Climbing Schedule
